On The Subject of Thankfulness

A few days ago Dad gave us the assignment to write a list of all things we are thankful for and to write a paragraph on one.  Here's what I wrote:

As I was thinking over all the hundreds of things I am thankful for, one thing stood out over all the rest.  My Bible.

Now you may be thinking, oh that's a good, spiritual thing to say.  Or, we're ALL thankful for that.  But no, I couldn't seem to get it out of my head.  Probably because in the last month, more than ever before, it has been my constant friend, help and encouragement.  In my list I wrote many material things such as my house, clothes, bed, TV, computer, and cell phone.  I wrote of relationships such as mom and dad, brothers and sisters, relatives, my boss, and pastor.  And also of personal luxuries like weekends, shopping, holidays, road trips and ministry opportunities.

But material things break, personal luxuries don't always go as planned and relationships can be strained.  But the Bible is a constant.  It's God's word to us.  When your material things break, you can go to it and know God owns the cattle on a thousand hills.  When personal luxuries don't go as planned, you can spend time reading about the one event that will someday go off as planned.  And when relationships are strained, the Bible tells of One who will never leave you or forsake you.  One who will be your very deep, intimate friend.

So this thanksgiving more than any year before, I am thankful for my Bible.
